City One Minutes is  niet het enige project dat zich bezighoudt met het begrip ‘De Stad’. De VPRO presenteert in samenwerking met  de Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam in september van dit jaar Eeuw van de Stad: een uitgebreide programmering op radio, televisie, internet en de VPRO-gids, die vanuit verschillende perspectieven het leven in de stad onderzoekt.

Wat zijn de effecten van verstedelijking? Hoe verhogen we de kwaliteit van leven in de stad? Welke nieuwe mogelijkheden, problemen, ervaringen en houdingen brengt het leven in de stad met zich mee? Wie trekken er eigenlijk van het platteland naar de stad en waarom? En welke mogelijkheden zien architecten en stedenbouwers, burgemeesters en politici, maar ook bewoners, kunstenaars, nieuwkomers, kortom wij allemaal, om het leven in de stad te verbeteren?

Weblog Eeuw van de Stad
Op het weblog Eeuw van de Stad lees je de laatste nieuwtjes en de meest diverse opinies die te maken hebben met het leven in de stad. De meeste blogs zijn geschreven door de webredactie van Eeuw van de Stad,  de programmamakers van de deelnemende radio- en televisieprogramma’s en de redactie van de televisiegids.

Thinking about New Orleans, the association with hurricane Kartrina is never far off. In August of 2005 the city was heavily damaged by this hurricane, which put big parts of New Orleans under water. The electrical system broke down and there was shortage on food, medication en clean drinking water. On top of that the city was tormented by violence and burglaries.

That the traces of Kartina are still lingering, becomes clear when you look at the City One Minute of Marscha Ercegovic. She filmed New Orleans from 7 till 8 a.m. Another special video clip of New Orleans was posted by Frank Relle, who filmed from 5 till 6 a.m. Click here for the City One Minutes from New Orleans.

Holland Doc
On the website of Holland Doc over 800 documentaries can be seen online, amongst others documentaries about New Orleans. In the documentary ‘The City and the Desire – Seven New Orleans Sketches’, documentary maker Marjoleine Boonstra searches for the fears and dreams of people whose lives have been shaken up by hurricane Katrina. In Robert, Mary and Katrina Boonstra paints a picture of people in a shelter. Their personal observations make the nightmare caused by Katrina come to life.

Wanneer je aan New Orleans denkt, komt al snel de associatie met orkaan Katrina naar boven. In augustus 2005 werd de stad zwaar getroffen door  deze orkaan en kwamen grote delen van New Orleans onder water te staan. De elektriciteit viel uit en er was een tekort aan voedsel, medicijnen en schoon drinkwater. Ook werd de stad geteisterd door geweld en plunderingen.
Dat de sporen van Katrina nog altijd zichtbaar zijn, kun je zien in de City One Minute van Marsha Ercegovic. Zij filmde de stad van 7 tot 8 uur ‘s ochtends. Een ander bijzonder filmpje uit New Orleans is die van Frank Relle,  van 5 tot 6 uur ’s ochtends. Klik hier voor de City One Minutes uit New Orleans.

Holland Doc
Op de website van Holland Doc staan meer dan 800 documentaires online, waaronder ook documentaires over New Orleans. In de documentaire ‘De stad en het verlangen - Zeven New Orleans Sketches’ gaat documentairemaakster Marjoleine Boonstra door de verwoeste straten van New Orleans op zoek naar de angsten en dromen van mensen, wier levens door Katrina op drift zijn geraakt. In ‘Robert, Mary en Katrina’ schetst Boonstra een portret van mensen in een opvangcentrum. Door hun persoonlijke obervaties wordt de nachtmerrie die Katrina veroorzaakt heeft haast voelbaar.

The artist Anne Verhoijsen, who made City One Minutes in Cairo, was planning to travel to Baghdad to do the same thing there. She later decided not to go, but her friend, the musician Sattar al Saadi (born in Baghdad, living in the Netherlands since 15 years), did go and is doing his best to film, which is not easy because of the security situation. Anne is keeping us up to date on Sattar’s adventures on her weblog.

One of his first adventures was being brought to the police station as a result of filming the Martyr’s Memorial. Sattar and his brother knew that filming on the streets was difficult and therefore stayed in the car, but apparentely they came too close to the monument. Allthough the police officer recognized his brother (the brother is a poet and writer), this didn’t prevent them from being brought to the police station. They got a warning and a check of the footage (which luckily included a writers conference - a legitimate excuse for why they were having the camera). Nonetheless, he was able to film Katamiya (holy mosque), the zoo, a funeral, a wedding, a market, a hairdresser, the Tigris river, the Umm Kalthoum cafe and the Al Rasheed Street which, according to Sattar, used to be the famous book street where all the intellectuals and artists met every Friday.

Sattar made about 9 films now and has found 6 people who were willing to work with him. He will be back in the Netherlands this Saturday and as soon as the oneminutes are ready, they can be seen on the cityoneminutes.org website!

In early June the website cityoneminutes.org was launched. New City One Minutes, which are video impressions of one minute, are being added to the website every day, made by artists from all over the globe. Take a look at Cleaning Mind for example, made bij Natnael Glmariam. In this City One Minute we get to see how people in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) prepare for prayer at five o’clock in the morning.

Begin juni is de website cityoneminutes.org gelanceerd. Er zijn elke dag nieuwe City One Minutes, video impressies van één minuut, te zien die kunstenaars vanuit alle delen van de wereld insturen. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar ‘Cleaning Mind’ gemaakt door Natnael Glmariam. Hierin zie je hoe men zich in Adidas Ababa (Ethiopië) om 6 uur ’s ochtends voorbereidt op het gebed.
